START A HEART
Promoting CPR and the Use of Automated External Defibrillators
Welcome to my web site, where you will learn more about Sudden Cardiac Arrest, more about me, and what you can do to help our communities offer the best possible intervention in the case of Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA).
What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest ? SCA is a failure in the heart's electrical system in which the heart stops suddenly and without warning. It is caused by life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias. One of the most common arrhythmias is called ventricular fibrillation. This is when the lower chambers of the heart quiver and are incapable
of pumping blood out to the rest of the body. A victim of sudden cardiac arrest immediately stops breathing, has little or no detectable pulse, and, with no intervention, will die within minutes.
Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the United States -- more than 300,000 adults die each year from this public health crisis. |
